Davao del Norte targets December groundbreaking for 15-MW WTE facility

Davao del Norte is eyeing a December 2026 groundbreaking for its proposed 15-megawatt (MW) waste-to-energy (WTE) facility in Barangay Mamacao, Kapalong, with a Malaysian investor expected to spearhead the project’s development.

Governor Edwin Jubahib said on Wednesday that the provincial government would provide the land for the facility, while project documents had already been submitted to the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) for processing.

“Then ang part sa provincial government is only the land area. Gisugdan na nato ang pag-process sa mga documents and ang gihulat na lang nato nga ma-groundbreaking na siya pag naa na-schedule ang Malaysian investor nga moari para groundbreaking,” Jubahib told the media.

He said the groundbreaking could take place in December, depending on the Malaysian investor’s availability and schedule.

The proposed facility is designed to convert waste into energy, potentially helping address solid waste management concerns while generating electricity for the local energy supply.

The project forms part of the provincial government’s efforts to explore alternative waste disposal and management systems that could provide environmental and energy benefits.

Its implementation, however, will depend on the completion of documentary requirements and the progress of project preparations.
