The City Government of Davao, in coordination with the Department of Education Region 11 (DepEd 11) and the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), is stepping up security measures in schools while strengthening psychosocial support for learners following the recent shooting incident at a school in Zamboanga City.
City Information Officer Harvey Lanticse said the city is working with DepEd to improve the safety of educational facilities while also addressing the mental health and psychosocial needs of students.
“While we continue to ensure the safety and security of our educational facilities, we are also working closely with the Department of Education (DepEd) to safeguard the overall welfare and well-being of our learners, including their mental health and psychosocial needs,” Lanticse said.
He said DepEd 11 has existing psychosocial support programs for learners who may need assistance. The City Government, through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), also has a team prepared to provide psychosocial support and debriefing when necessary.
The strengthened measures were discussed during a security coordination meeting on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, attended by representatives from DepEd 11, DCPO, and the City Government of Davao.
Schools Division Superintendent Reynante Solitario met with DCPO City Director Colonel Peter Madria, Lanticse, and other safety officials to discuss proactive steps to prevent violence in schools and improve emergency preparedness.
The measures include stricter security checks at school entrances, intensified anti-threat awareness campaigns within school communities, and improved emergency response protocols in coordination with local agencies.
The initiative is in line with Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte’s directive to strengthen security in and around schools and other learning facilities across the city.
Lanticse said the city will continue working with DepEd, law enforcement agencies, and other education partners to protect learners and provide the necessary support.
“We remain committed to working with our education partners to ensure that our learners are safe and secure and receive the appropriate care and support during this time,” he said.
