A 19-year-old man who was reportedly swept away by strong river currents while attempting to cross a swollen waterway was found dead on Monday in Barangay Bangkal, Matanao, Davao del Sur, authorities said.
The victim, identified as alias “PJ,” of Purok Everlasting, Barangay Bangkal, was discovered at around 12 noon on Monday, July 27 by a resident of Purok Rosal, according to the Matanao Municipal Police Station.
Police said PJ’s body was found caught in driftwood along the Asbang Gutnga River. He was wearing only his underwear when rescuers recovered him, indicating that the strong current may have stripped away his clothing.
Initial police investigation and information from the victim’s family indicated that PJ had attempted to cross an overflowing section of the river despite the strong current brought about by continuous heavy rains.
His relatives said residents frequently cross the river at the same location whenever floodwaters rise because it serves as a regular access route to the community. However, they noted that the crossing has long been considered hazardous, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
The family also pointed out that PJ’s death was not an isolated incident, saying several people had previously drowned after being swept away by the river’s powerful currents during floods. They expressed hope that authorities would implement long-term measures to improve safety in the area and prevent similar tragedies.
The Matanao Municipal Police Station renewed its appeal for the public to remain vigilant as persistent rains continue to raise water levels in rivers and streams across the municipality.
Authorities urged residents to avoid crossing overflowing rivers, creeks, and flooded roads, emphasizing that no destination is worth risking one’s life. They also advised the public to heed weather advisories and wait until floodwaters subside before attempting to cross waterways.
