The Department of Tourism 11 (DOT 11) has intensified its monitoring of the Davao Region’s tourism landscape as the global fuel crisis begins to take a toll on traveler behavior and overhead expenses.
Regional Director Tanya Rabat-Tan confirmed during the recent Habi at Kape forum that the local industry is currently grappling with international economic pressures that are forcing travelers to rethink their spending. This shift has resulted in a visible dip in visitor arrivals across the region’s various provinces.
Rabat-Tan noted that the downturn is a shared experience across the country and is not isolated to the Philippines. The hospitality sector, in particular, is navigating a challenging environment marked by a combination of booking cancellations and more hesitant participation from the public. Even during the typically busy Holy Week season, the Director observed that while there was movement, the volume of travelers failed to match the peaks seen in previous years.
Despite the cooling of general leisure travel, the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector has emerged as a vital pillar of stability. For the month of April, major venues in the region have reported that pre-booked conventions and conferences are proceeding as scheduled. While there has been a slight decrease in the number of individual attendees per event, the lack of major cancellations has provided a necessary economic cushion for the local industry.
The agency’s commitment to keeping the sector afloat is rooted in the protection of local livelihoods. Rabat-Tan emphasized that the survival of the tourism industry is inseparable from the welfare of the thousands of workers whose daily income depends on tourism-related activities. Maintaining a steady flow of visitors is essential to preventing widespread job losses within the region.
To counter the current economic volatility, DOT 11 is pivoting its strategy toward high-value business travel and more aggressive capacity building. The regional office is prioritizing the rollout of industry-wide training, enhancing its digital marketing efforts, and conducting thorough product development validations. By focusing on these strategic areas, the DOT aims to ensure that the Davao Region remains a premier, competitive destination even as the global economy remains unpredictable.
