MinDA deepens EFTA ties to accelerate Mindanao’s sustainable growth, trade

The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) is ramping up its collaboration with European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states, opening new pathways for trade, investments, and sustainable development in Mindanao.

During the EFTA–Mindanao Dialogue in Davao City, Secretary Leo Tereso A. Magno highlighted the strong synergy between Mindanao’s growth priorities and EFTA’s expertise, particularly in renewable energy, fisheries, aquaculture, and innovation-driven sectors.

Magno noted that the partnership is evolving into a more strategic and action-oriented alliance, with both sides poised to work together in green technology, maritime industries, sustainable finance, and digital infrastructure.

Norway stood out as a key partner, especially in sustainable fisheries and aquaculture—areas that align closely with Mindanao’s coastal hubs such as General Santos, Zamboanga, Davao Oriental, and the Surigao Strait.

MinDA also pointed to the island’s vast renewable energy potential, emphasizing opportunities in wind, hydro, solar, and hybrid systems, along with prospects for technology transfer and green investments.

The Philippines–EFTA Free Trade Agreement continues to serve as a foundation for stronger economic ties, improving market access and fostering investment flows. Despite relatively modest trade volumes, Switzerland and Norway remain important partners in both trade and investments.

As a major contributor to the country’s agricultural and fisheries exports, Mindanao stands to benefit from enhanced access to European markets under existing trade arrangements.

“Southern Mindanao is poised for its next growth chapter,” Magno said, citing a projected 6–7 percent growth rate and increasing investor interest in sustainable, high-impact ventures.

The initiative supports the national agenda to diversify trade partnerships, fast-track the energy transition, and strengthen regional growth corridors under the Philippine Development Plan 2023–2028.

MinDA reaffirmed its commitment to building strong international and local partnerships to unlock Mindanao’s economic potential and drive inclusive, long-term growth.
