City gov’t of Davao adopts ‘flexible Fridays’ to cut energy costs

The city government of Davao is set to transform its operational structure starting Friday, April 17, 2026, with the introduction of a “flexible Friday” work arrangement.

This initiative serves as a cornerstone of the city’s broader energy conservation strategy, designed to lower utility costs and reduce the environmental footprint of government buildings. By allowing eligible offices to transition to a remote setup at the end of each week, the city aims to significantly decrease power consumption without compromising the efficiency of its administrative functions.

Under this new policy, standard on-site operations will continue from Monday to Thursday between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. On Fridays, employees in departments whose duties can be performed effectively outside a traditional office setting will shift to a work-from-home arrangement.

The city government stressed that this transition is carefully managed to ensure that public service remains the top priority and that the quality of assistance provided to Dabawenyos remains consistent regardless of the staff’s physical location.

To maintain the continuity of critical city operations, several essential sectors are officially excluded from the Friday remote work schedule. Personnel involved in health and medical services, emergency response, and disaster risk reduction and management will continue to report on-site daily. Similarly, public safety, security services, and traffic management will remain fully operational at their respective stations. Offices responsible for immediate frontline tasks, such as the direct receiving and releasing of legal or administrative documents, will also maintain a physical presence to ensure that urgent public needs are met without delay.
