Two more sections of Davao Coastal Bypass Road set to open this month

Motorists can expect faster and more convenient travel as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) prepares to open two additional segments of the Davao City Coastal Bypass Road this June.

The agency said the newly opened sections are expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and cut travel time between Toril and parts of downtown Davao to approximately 15 minutes, a substantial improvement from the current 45-minute commute.

According to DPWH, the move forms part of the national government’s push to accelerate the construction of bypass roads and transport infrastructure, in line with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to improve mobility and strengthen regional connectivity.

The agency noted that the project is expected to benefit motorists through reduced travel time, lower fuel consumption, and decreased transportation costs.

Designed as an alternative route to the heavily traveled Davao-Cotabato Road, the 17.8-kilometer Coastal Bypass Road is envisioned to help decongest major road networks across the city while enhancing access between key urban and commercial districts.

The four-lane highway stretches from Bago Aplaya in the south to R. Castillo in the north and is being developed in four segments. The first section, Segment A, covering approximately 8 kilometers from Bago Aplaya to Times Beach, was inaugurated and opened to the public in July 2023.

The succeeding segments will further expand access to the city center and northern districts. Once completed, the project is expected to improve the movement of people, goods, and services while supporting economic growth in Davao City and neighboring provinces.

A key feature of the final phase is the 1.34-kilometer Davao River (Bucana) Bridge, which is projected to become the longest river bridge in Mindanao. The bridge is expected to play a vital role in completing the coastal corridor and strengthening transportation links throughout the region.

Upon full completion, the Davao City Coastal Bypass Road is expected to serve as a major transportation artery, providing a safer, faster, and more efficient travel experience for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
