Vice President Sara Duterte did not mince words on Saturday as she aired her reservations over the appointment of former Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla as the country’s new Ombudsman.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to Manay, Davao Oriental, Duterte said she would not have chosen Remulla for the post if the decision had been hers.
“Ipagpasa-Diyos na lang natin siya at ang kanyang mga gagawin bilang Ombudsman. Kung ako presidente, hindi siya ang ia-appoint ko na Ombudsman,” she said.
Her remarks come amid ongoing criticism and public skepticism surrounding Remulla’s designation. The position of Ombudsman is tasked with investigating public officials for corruption and other forms of misconduct — a role that demands independence and credibility.
Duterte’s comment hints at her doubt over Remulla’s ability to execute the responsibilities of the office without bias. The timing of her statement also adds to the mounting scrutiny over whether political alliances may influence accountability mechanisms under his leadership.
The vice president also responded sharply to Remulla’s earlier declaration that he intends to examine her Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN).
“Huwag na niya silipin. Diyos ko. Huwag na niya silipin. Huwag na niya silipin. Ilagay na niya sa harap niya at pag-aralan na niya ng maayos kung ano man yung gusto niyang gawin,” she said in reaction to Remulla’s statement.
In his first media appearance after being named Ombudsman, Remulla said he would review Duterte’s SALN for any possible irregularities, stressing that all government officials — including top-ranking ones — should be subject to transparency and accountability checks.
Duterte, however, appeared unfazed and implied that Remulla should focus on fulfilling his role responsibly rather than targeting her.
