Manhunt intensifies after detainee escapes DCPO custodial facility

A large-scale manhunt is underway following the escape of a detainee classified as a Top 4 City-Level High-Value Individual from the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) Custodial Facility in the early hours of Thursday, February 5, 2026, authorities confirmed.

DCPO Acting Director Col. Mannan Muarip said the escape was discovered at around 2:20 a.m. The detainee was identified as Alfred Matute, 35, who was being held for alleged violations of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 (Republic Act 9165).

Immediately after confirming the incident, Muarip said the DCPO activated its Tracker Team under the City Special Operations Group (CSOG), with reinforcement from tracker teams of all 19 city police stations, to conduct an intensive search and apprehension operation.

Ongoing efforts include the establishment of checkpoints, pursuit operations, intelligence gathering, and coordination with neighboring police units to hasten Matute’s recapture and ensure public safety.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Muarip assured the public that all available police resources are being fully utilized in the continuing manhunt. He also said an internal investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape, in accordance with existing laws and procedures.

Muarip urged the public to assist authorities by reporting any information that may lead to Matute’s arrest.

“Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is encouraged to immediately contact the nearest police station or local authorities,” he said, adding that the identities and safety of informants will be strictly protected.

Authorities also called on Matute to voluntarily surrender, noting that such action will be considered under the law.

“The manhunt will remain relentless until the escapee is apprehended and returned to lawful custody,” Muarip said.

The DCPO reiterated its commitment to maintaining public safety, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring transparency as the search continues.

“We assure the people of Davao City that decisive actions are being taken to resolve this matter at the soonest possible time,” Muarip added.
