Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Chair Secretary Leo Tereso A. Magno and Asian Development Bank (ADB) Philippines Country Director Andrew Jeffries met on the sidelines of the Mindanao Development Forum (MDF) 2025 to discuss strategic initiatives aimed at accelerating sustainable and inclusive development across Mindanao.
Their dialogue focused on three critical areas: mitigating flooding in the Mindanao River Basin, advancing the region’s transition to clean energy, and enhancing transport and connectivity infrastructure.
“We deeply appreciate ADB’s continued support, especially in public-private partnerships, connectivity, and energy development. These are investments not just in infrastructure, but in the resilience and future of Mindanao,” said Secretary Magno.
The officials emphasized the need for a comprehensive, long-term strategy to address the persistent flooding in the Mindanao River Basin. Solutions discussed included a mix of infrastructure upgrades, watershed rehabilitation, and community-based interventions to reduce disaster risks and protect vulnerable provinces.
On connectivity, both parties agreed that modern transport systems are key to improving regional trade, mobility, and economic integration—positioning Mindanao as a stronger economic player within the Philippines and the broader ASEAN region.
Energy transition was also high on the agenda. The discussion underscored the importance of diversifying Mindanao’s energy mix by integrating more renewable sources while maintaining a reliable and affordable power supply for households and industries.
Also present during the meeting were Department of Finance Undersecretary Joven Balbosa, MinDA Assistant Secretary Romeo Montenegro, and Oscar Amiel Badiola of ADB Philippines.
The meeting was among several bilateral engagements held during MDF 2025, a high-level platform that brings together government agencies, development partners, and key stakeholders to align efforts and forge partnerships in support of Mindanao’s long-term development goals.
