Councilor Kristine May John A. Mercado, president of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation, on Tuesday condemned and demanded a public apology from controversial vlogger Crist Briand P. Oncada, also known as “Brader,” over an offensive social media post.
Mercado was referring to Oncada’s post on September 2, “Looking for baboy na halal.”
“Let me be direct: this is offensive, misleading, and unacceptable—especially when done merely to gain likes, shares, and followers,” Mercado said in her privilege speech during the regular session of the 21st City Council at the Sangguniang Panlungsod.
Mercado also urged Oncada to take responsibility by issuing a public apology and committing to greater cultural awareness moving forward.
Mercado, a Muslim, stated that for Muslims, their dietary laws are clear and sacred and that pork or “baboy” can never be halal.
“The phrase ‘halal na baboy’” is a contradiction in itself. Using it carelessly not only spreads misinformation but also disrespects our faith and our identity,” she said.
Mercado emphasized that as public servants, they are expected to lead with respect, understanding, and inclusion.
She also cited acting Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte’s reminder to the Dabawenyos that discrimination has no place in Davao City.
“Time and again, he has stood for unity and mutual respect. Yet, we continue to see content online that mocks what is sacred to others. This is not just about religion. It is about upholding respect for diversity in our city—whether Muslim, Christian, Lumad, or any other community,” she said.
“We cannot allow our platforms—whether in social media or public office—to be used to spread discrimination or misinformation,” she added.
Mercado emphasized that freedom of speech is not freedom to disrespect.
“Let us remind everyone that Davao City is a city of respect, inclusivity, and unity,” she said.
